MOUNT OLIVE— The University of Mount Olive (UMO), in coordination with the OFWB Convention, has been designated as an emergency relief drop-off site to support the ongoing recovery efforts in Western North Carolina, particularly the hardest-hit areas in Black Mountain and surrounding communities. All donated items will be delivered to Cragmont, an established distribution site, where they will be provided to those in need.
Starting Wednesday, October 9, UMO will accept donations from the community between 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM. Volunteers will be on-site to assist with sorting and loading items. Donations will be collected over several days to fill a 42-foot trailer and dispatched to Cragmont.
The list of critical needs includes:
Non-perishable food items
Bottled water and hydration packs
Baby wipes, diapers (children and adult)
Baby Food, including liquid formula
Trash bags, paper towels, and toilet paper
Cleaning supplies
Plastic utensils and manual can openers
Bug spray and sunscreen
Pet food
Feminine hygiene products
Hand sanitizer
Heavy-duty work gloves and socks (unopened)
Tarps
Five-gallon buckets
Livestock supplies
Batteries
Sports drinks, energy drinks, and powder hydration packets
First Aid Kits including Benadryl
UMO President Dr. H. Edward Croom has been in the region all week, personally aiding in the recovery efforts by clearing paths, serving meals, and doing whatever is necessary to help those affected.
“The devastation is unimaginable,” said Croom. “Rich or poor, everyone is in desperate need of the basic necessities of life. The media coverage has not adequately captured the extent of the destruction. We are committed to doing everything in our power to provide relief. We hope that the local community will come together and help fill this truck with essential items for those in need.”
Dr. Croom also emphasized that while many local collection efforts are already underway, UMO aims to serve as a central hub for those who need a place to bring their donations. "Whatever we can do to help fill this truck and ensure it reaches those in need is our goal," he stated.
